Finland Trip

18th to 28th August 2006

In August a group of nine young people from the church headed off to Finland, were we had all been 2 years ago… While we were there we went to a campsite called Jumijarvi which is owned by the Swedish speaking Methodist church! We met up with a group of Fins over there who we had got to know 2 year ago. The campsite is on the side of a lake and the only words to describe it is, “a little bit of Heaven here on earth.” We had a great time there, catching up with old friends, playing volleyball, games and being surrounded by the amazing lake, where we swam, washed our hair, brushed our teeth and canoed in! It was certainly an experience… While we were there we set up a 24 hour prayer room, where we eached prayed for an hour or more, it was a great time to get away on your own from all the madness and spend time with God in the stillness.

After Jumi we headed to Vasa, which is on the sea and there we received teaching from Stefan, he spoke on Listening to God and God Dreams, which really spoke to us all and was inspiring.  We also had late night worship and small groups which were a great opportunity to talk about things further and pray for each other. In Vasa we also did quite a bit of sightseeing, we visited a place called Stundars (folk park), went cliff jumping into a lake (amazing), went on speedboats out to islands, shopped, took the service in Vasa Methodist church, had a big game of hide and seek around Vasa and that was just some of the fun that went on there!

As it was the end of the summer when we were in Finland, they celebrate the end of the summer cottage season, so we headed to a place called Jakobstad to go to a party, to celebrate with the Fins, here we played volleyball and had a swim in the sea at 10pm, it was freezing but a great wee memory!

We all had an amazing time out in Finland, were God taught us a lot, we grew in friendships, had a lot of fun and we would all go back again tomorrow!

The members of the group were:-

Lauren Allen, Helen and Kirsty Dunlop, David Henry, Thomas Jones, Matthew and Rebecca McGinn, Marty Rath and Andrew Scott.
